Known limitations

Platforms#

Nimbo runs on Windows 11. The sync engine also runs on Linux, and a Linux version of the app is being worked on but is not released yet. A macOS version is not planned at the moment.

Virtual file system#

• Virtual file system mode is newer than live mode and has seen fewer hours of real use, so treat it accordingly and keep a backup of anything important. Switching back to Live file system is always available and does not delete anything.
• Virtual mode applies to a whole account, not to individual folders.
• Keeping a folder on this device only reaches subfolders you have already opened in Explorer at the moment, see Keeping files offline.

Server features#

• End-to-end encrypted folders are not supported. Nimbo does not implement Nextcloud's end-to-end encryption. It recognises encrypted folders and leaves them alone on the server, and tells you once which folder it skipped. Nextcloud's ordinary server-side encryption is fine, because it is invisible to sync clients.
• External storage and federated shares sync like normal folders, however they inherit the quirks of whatever is behind them. Some storage reports files as changed when they have not, which makes them download again.
• Files the server refuses, such as .htaccess, are blocked by default. See Files that do not sync if your server accepts them.

The damage guard#

• The guard's limits are fixed at 50 files and half of a folder, and cannot be changed per folder yet.
• Deletions below those limits are treated as normal changes, and your copies go to the Recycle Bin, which removes old items by itself once it is full.
• A folder that is no longer shared with you is recognised from the permissions the server reports. A share inside another share cannot be told apart from a deletion.

Windows#

• Some names that are fine on the server are not allowed on Windows, such as names containing : | ? or ending in a full stop or space, and reserved names like CON. Files with those names cannot be created on your PC, so rename them on the server if you need them here.
• Windows has room for a limited number of icon badges across every program, so if several sync apps are installed some badges may not show.
• Paths longer than 260 characters work in Nimbo, however some other programs may still have trouble opening files with paths that long.

Updates and support#

• Updates come from GitHub, so updating needs github.com to be reachable.
• Nimbo has no telemetry and no automatic crash reports, so a problem is only known about if you report it.
